The Challenge and the Opportunity
Mental illness is at epidemic levels in America.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that about 25% of all U.S. adults have a mental illness and nearly 50% of all U.S. adults will develop at least one mental illness during their lifetime.
More children in the U.S. have a psychiatric disorder than the number of children with cancer, diabetes, and AIDS – combined.
Mental illness causes or contributes to abnormal alterations in thinking, mood or behavior, and often impairs physical functioning. Those with mental illness experience incapacitating personal, social and occupational impairment, and often premature death due to co-occuring medical conditions or suicide.
From a public health perspective, the economic and social impacts of mental illness are exorbitant.
